Restaurant review: Na Na Thai, Buellton

In Buellton, Na Na Thai brings the heat with crispy lumpia spring rolls, left, and pad thai rice noodles with shrimp.

After celebrating its first birthday, Na Na Thai is still surrounded by buzz that’s as strong as when it first opened. What started out as a successful series of pop-ups at Bar Le Côte in Los Olivos has evolved into a wildly popular restaurant in Buellton.

Husband-and-wife team Nik and Ashley Ramirez own the colorful strip mall spot along with Greg and Daisy Ryan, who helm Bell’s in Los Alamos and the Companion Hospitality group. Restaurant vets Nik and Ashley lived for four years on a street known as Soi Na Na in Bangkok, where they became infatuated with the intense flavors of the city’s street food.

Traditional decor belies Na Na Thai’s strip-mall location.

Now their casual restaurant sees a lively mix of locals, foodies who hop off US Highway 101, and Santa Ynez Valley wine industry folks.

While turning out high-caliber food with a spotlight on ingredients from local farms and ranches, Nik is careful to respect Thai tradition. His dishes are authentically spiced; our server noted that some of the dishes “intentionally carry a lot of heat.”

Tofu spring roll with dipping sauce.

A habit-forming peanut sauce accompanies the por pia tofu spring roll.

Consider sharing to sample as much as possible. You might start with a few small plates such as crispy lumpia, fried spring rolls filled with curried beef; gai tod, an exquisite fried Jidori chicken with nam jim jaew chile dipping sauce; or the light and flavorful por pia tofu spring roll, plump with pickled daikon and carrot, mung-bean noodles, basil, mint, and cilantro, and served with an addictive peanut dipping sauce.

Among the wok items, the pad thai stir-fried rice noodles with grilled shrimp, peanuts, egg, and salted shallots is the best version of the dish I’ve had. Deep-fried whole sea bass with fried garlic sauce is a perfectly executed crowd-pleaser. Curries, soups, salads, and daily specials round out the menu. For a fitting finale, try the banana fritters with cashew ice cream. A 20% service fee applies to parties of six or more.
