Restaurant review: Carmel Valley’s Cheese Garden is serving up cakes from the heavens

Matcha Double Fromage Cheesecake from Cheese Garden.

With their delicate, fluffy texture and just-sweet-enough flavor, trendy Japanese-style cheesecakes are all the rage. At Cheese Garden, a dessert shop in San Diego’s Carmel Valley neighborhood, the cloud-like cakes are only some of the delights dreamed up by the Canada-based bakery and café.

There’s also a personal-size puff pastry tart with a tangy cream-cheese filling, and a 3-layered concoction of airy cheesecake offered in multiple flavors atop jiggly egg pudding with a caramel base.

Organic, ceremonial-grade matcha powder lends its grassy earthiness to a triple-stacked matcha sponge cake topped with baked matcha cheesecake and frozen mascarpone cream, all coated in deep-green matcha cake crumbs (pictured). The slight bitterness of the premium green tea also offsets a tiramisu layered with velvety matcha cream and ladyfingers.

If your sweet tooth still isn’t sated, there are iced blended drinks in flavors like pineapple yogurt and strawberry cheesecake.
