AAA's Digest of Motor Laws summarizes laws and regulations governing the registration and operation of passenger vehicles in all 50 United States, the District of Columbia, U.S. possessions, and Canadian provinces.

AAA is working to reduce distracted driving by supporting laws that deter distracted driving, conducting research to assist law enforcement, and promoting campaigns that emphasize the dangers of distracted driving.

AAA encourages motorists to make their voices heard. To participate in the legislative process, you can track bills moving through session. You can also contact legislators through the Constituent Viewpoint Opinion Line.

Online courses available in select areas

California
California traffic school

If you’ve received a traffic ticket for a moving violation and have not attended a traffic school course in the past 18 months, AAA offers an online course that satisfies the court requirement for ticket dismissal in many areas. 

Maine
Maine driver improvement course

AAA's online driver improvement course helps drivers fine-tune driving skills and refresh their knowledge of traffic laws. This course has been approved by the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety for a 3 demerit-point credit.

Texas
Texas defensive driving course

If you received a ticket for a moving violation and have not taken a defensive driving course in the past 12 months, this course satisfies the court requirement for ticket dismissal.1

Virginia
Virginia driver improvement course

This online course helps drivers fine-tune driving skills and refresh their knowledge of traffic laws. AAA’s online driver improvement course has been approved by the DMV.

Kentucky
Kentucky driver improvement program

Even the most experienced drivers can improve their habits behind the wheel. The AAA Driver Improvement Program, designed for all drivers, presents the techniques, skills, and information necessary to navigate the road today.3

New Hampshire Maine
Maine & New Hampshire driver improvement classroom course

This 6-hour course teaches the newest techniques of defensive driving. After completion, you’ll receive a 3 demerit-point credit on your driving record. $45 for AAA members; $50 for non-members.4 Pre-registration is required.

Ohio Driver Safety Improvement Program

This program is perfect for businesses looking to enhance their employees’ driving skills. It teaches and reinforces defensive driving techniques and general safety rules of driving. Options include 3-, 4-, and 8-hour classroom instruction. 

Traffic cones
Ohio Remedial Driver Improvement Program

This 8-hour program for adults meets the state requirement for license reinstatement after a 12-point suspension, for a court-ordered action, or to obtain a 2-point credit. It reinforces traffic safety, defensive driving, and DUI consequences.
