February is the month to celebrate love, and in Virginia, you don’t have to venture far for a romantic retreat. From urban adventures to seaside getaways, Tidewater has something for every couple. Here are 4 charming places to spend time with your special someone.

1. Chincoteague Island

For water-loving couples

Relax to the max on Chincoteague Island, where stunning sunsets, delicious dining, and nautical excursions will inspire couples to leave their worries behind.

“Chincoteague Island is very laid-back with small-town charm,” says Evelyn Shotwell, executive director of the Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce. “The slow, easy pace is attractive to visitors who like to go with the flow without a set agenda for every minute.”

One thing to add to your agenda, however, is catching the sunset. Take in idyllic views complete with wild pony and dolphin sightings aboard the Assateague Explorer, a 40-foot tour boat offering sunset wildlife cruises between Chincoteague and Assateague islands (adults, $59). For adventure-seeking couples, rent a double kayak from Assateague Adventures ($45 for 2 hours) to behold the region’s creeks and coves up close.

Love soars to new heights at Assateague Lighthouse, located a quarter mile away from Chincoteague Island (free admission). Panoramic island views reward visitors who climb the 175 steps to the top.

Finish the day with a seafood feast alfresco at AJ’s on the Creek, or cozy up at Bill’s Prime Seafood & Steaks.

Stay at: The Refuge Inn, where you can visit wild ponies in an on-site pasture. Rates start at $99; AAA discount available.

Looking to stay active on your getaway? If the answer is yes, then head to Virginia Beach. While it’s typically a summer destination, visiting this seaside town in the off-season means more sand, space, and privacy for you and your paramour.

He suggests the Waterman Tour ($88 per person, minimum 4 people), an excursion where you’ll set crab traps, dig for clams, and sort oysters destined for a bountiful seafood supper. “It’s a very interactive experience,” Ludford says. “You’re basically a commercial fisherman for three-and-a-half hours.”

Start off at the Hermitage Museum & Gardens (free admission). The early 20th-century mansion displays more than 5,000 objects spanning 5,000 years of art history. After browsing the extensive collection, you’ll want to take a leisurely stroll through the surrounding gardens.

At the Chrysler Museum of Art (free admission), check out the works of Jackson Pollock, the Ancient Greeks, contemporary artists, and more. With more than 30,000 items to peruse, the true gem of the museum is its glass collection, among the largest in the world. And don’t just view the art—make some, too. The on-site glass studio frequently holds workshops for beginners.

To round out your cultural excursion, attend a performance by the best talent in the region. Whether you choose the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, Virginia Opera, or Virginia Stage Company, live entertainment options are plentiful.
