Restaurant review: Saffy’s in Los Angeles is a nod to ’60s and ’70s Morocco

Saffy's retro interior features a rose pink bar.

After years of success with their downtown duo of restaurants—Italian eatery Bestia and Middle Eastern mainstay Bavel—husband-and-wife chefs Ori Menashe and Genevieve Gergis have expanded their “family” into East Hollywood with Saffy’s, named after their daughter, Saffron.

As at Bavel, the fare leans modern Middle Eastern revolving around a wood-burning hearth, but the menu is firmly rooted in homestyle cooking with classics like bright-green falafel, a fragrant tabbouleh salad, lamb and beef shawarma, a mix of meaty kebabs, and some seriously life-changing hummus.

Green falafel

Start your meal at Saffy's with an order of green falafel.

Creative seasonal dishes might include roasted carrots with harissa jam or shishito peppers tossed with burnt challah breadcrumbs.

Set within a stained glass–flecked art deco building, the neighborhood haunt is a nod to 1960s and 1970s Morocco. There’s plenty of color and retro-style pieces like the the rose pink–tiled curvilinear bar, gold banquettes, and globe light fixtures.

Bonus: You can stock up on baked goods next door at Saffy’s daytime coffee shop, which also offers a shakshuka-laced Arabic breakfast on weekends.
