You’ve picked your destination, cruise line, and stateroom. But how can you make the most of your upcoming cruise? Here are 10 tips from AAA travel advisors for a more efficient and enjoyable trip.

1. Download your cruise line’s app. This can be helpful for planning onboard activities, navigating the ship, and tracking onboard spending. Some apps even have onboard messaging so you can stay connected with your travel companions.

2. Make sure your itinerary is set. This includes flights, transportation to the port, and check-in times. Double-check that you have all the documents you’ll need to fly as well as cruise—your passport is especially important if you’re traveling internationally. Avoid booking a flight that arrives the same day your cruise embarks to minimize the risk of flight delays or cancellations. If you must fly on the same day, choose the earliest flight possible.

3. Book extras ahead of time. This includes Wi-Fi, beverage packages, specialty dining, and shore excursions. Popular shore excursions often fill up quickly, so book early to secure your spot or schedule a private tour.

Packing hacks

4. Pack wrinkle-resistant clothing. This will keep you looking fresh, as many cruise lines don't allow irons onboard. You can also check if your cruise line provides laundry service.

5. Buy some magnetic hooks. Cruise-stateroom walls are metal, so magnetic hooks are helpful for hanging clothes, bags, bathing suits, hats, and towels. Maximizing your space is even more important if you’re sharing a cabin.

6. Pack a reusable tote or grocery bag. It will come in handy for corralling your belongings, whether you’re lounging on deck or shopping in ports.

7. Settle your bill at the front desk a day early. This will give you time to verify all charges and resolve any discrepancies. You’ll be happy to skip the long line on disembarkation day.

8. Make any onboard purchases before the ship docks. Some transactions may not be allowed in port due to tax restrictions.

9. Book your next cruise. If you plan to travel with the same cruise line again, onboard rebooking incentives can save you money.

10. Put your bags outside your cabin the night before you disembark. This way, you’ll have one less thing to worry about on your last morning. Just be sure to keep with you anything you’ll need, such as toiletries and medication.
