Even in a crossover segment that seems to get more crowded by the day, the completely redesigned Lexus NX’s high points make it stand out. The compact luxury SUV is offered in 6 different variations, each with its own powertrain and amenities.
The 350h is a hybrid version that combines enough creature comforts and fuel-efficiency improvements to make it worth the $3,200 bump in price compared with the NX 250 gasoline version.
The 350h’s gas-electric powertrain mates a 2.5 liter, 4-cylinder engine with 2 electric motors, good for 239 hp, a substantial 45 hp increase over the outgoing NX 300h.
It strikes an ideal balance between healthy acceleration and high fuel economy (39 mpg in combined driving). The suspension also splits the difference between decent handling and a comfortable ride. AWD is standard.
The NX’s 5-passenger cabin (better suited for 4) is both attractive and quiet, qualities that add to its overall upscale feel. Functionally, Lexus gets bonus points for ditching the difficult-to-use console-mounted touch pad infotainment system controller in favor of touch screens; a 14-inch version is optional.
Our only real knock on the 350h is that we’d like to see the audio system get a tuning knob to match its handy volume control.
