If the phrase “luxury off-roader” sounds like an oxymoron, the all-new for 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee will change your mind. It has glitz and off-road cred.
The top-trim Summit Reserve model, for example, abounds with high-end appointments, including perforated leather upholstery and genuine wood trim. The cabin also features nearly every creature comfort imaginable, from heated/ventilated front seats with built-in massage to an audiophile-quality 19-speaker McIntosh music system and a plethora of digital displays.
The base model Grand Cherokee comes with a 3.6-liter V6 (293 hp); a 5.7-liter V8 engine (357 hp) and a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder plug-in hybrid model (375 hp) are also available. An 8-speed automatic transmission is standard. RWD is standard on V6 models; 4WD is either available or standard on all 3 powertrains. The V8 powertrain boosts towing capacity to 7,200 pounds but at the expense of fuel economy (17 mpg in combined driving).
The Grand Cherokee isn’t exactly nimble, but the suspension provides decent handling by old-school SUV standards. Ride quality is decidedly firm; other crossovers deliver a smoother driving experience.
