Car review: Hyundai Kona Limited AWD

When shopping for a vehicle, it’s natural to have certain expectations. So a new model that exceeds them—like the second-generation Hyundai Kona—is all the more noteworthy.

This small SUV’s strengths start with a significant growth spurt, which has made this likable crossover even better. Its larger dimensions create a cabin with an additional 3 inches of rear-seat legroom and nearly 64 cubic feet of cargo space. The interior features good-quality materials and a handsome, high-tech look.

The Kona offers solid performance, especially with the turbocharged 1.6-liter 4-cylinder that’s standard on upper trim levels.

The Kona’s new suspension delivers an appealing balance of sharp handling and a comfortable ride on all but the roughest roads. Its long list of desirable standard features include a wide digital gauge cluster and infotainment screen, a complete set of advanced safety features, and an exceptional 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

Just a couple of quibbles: First, the gearshift is now mounted on the steering column, which requires you to twist it for Drive and Reverse and push a button for Park. That takes some getting used to. Second, the Kona’s somewhat polarizing rear styling is clunkier than the previous edition’s more aerodynamic look.

Vehicle layout: 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder (190 hp), 8-speed automatic, AWD.

MSRP, base model/as tested: $25,625/$34,695

MPG, city/highway/combined: 24/29/26 (AWD)

Safety ratings: NHTSA: not rated; IIHS: good (all crash-related ratings), Top Safety Pick Plus

Basic warranty: 5 years/60,000 miles

Spare tire: Temporary compact spare

Final assembly: Ulsan, South Korea

Takeaway: One of the best small crossovers is now even better
