Honda Fit: refreshed and refined

A little car that’s big on style, economy, versatility, and fun.

The Fit is Honda’s cleverly designed subcompact that’s small on the outside but surprisingly spacious inside. Last redesigned in 2015, the third-generation Fit got a mid-cycle refresh in 2018: exterior cosmetic changes, available advanced safety features on all trim levels, and a larger touch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on most trim levels.

On the outside, the refreshed Fit looks more refined, with a noticeable family resemblance to the Civic. Inside, the front seats are comfortable and supportive, there’s a surprising amount of backseat legroom, and the second-row Magic Seat configures in lots of different ways so you can carry all kinds of cargo with ease. Visibility is good all round, cabin materials have been upgraded, and the instruments and controls are straightforward and functional.

Under the hood, there’s a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine (130 hp) and a CVT. Gas mileage is excellent; expect about 35 mpg in combined driving. Even the base-level LX with automatic transmission can be equipped with Honda Sensing, the automaker’s suite of advanced safety features.

The Fit is fun to drive, too. The steering is precise, and the car is reasonably quiet—although the engine/CVT combo sounds harsh and buzzy when pushed, especially at lower speeds. Anything else not to like? The ride may be too stiff for some (especially on long trips), the radio controls are too complicated, and the engine could use a few more horses.

But these are piddling complaints, and the Fit’s spunky demeanor renders them inconsequential. For both devotees and potential converts, the Fit delivers.
